Identity

1. Activities
  •  Identity - Pie
The children have to draw a pie and think about things that are important for them.
They are 3 aspects which you can use for the Pie.

  -Local (Family, Friends, Work/ Study,…)
-National (Nation/ Country, Political party, Public medical, …)
  -Transnational (Cosmopolitan, Online, Professional, …)

Important to say is that every identity –pie is different because everybody has different interests and a different identity.

  • Creative Profiles
The Task of this activity is to create a silhouette from your partner and to ask him questions about himself.
After that you can paint, write, draw, … on the silhouette. Finally you can see all information about this person.

I like this activity because you can do it also with small children. And it is a funny way to get to know each other better.

  • Personal Profiles
A Personal profile is a letter about yourself. About your Name, Hobbies Date of birth and so on.
The children can create this letter individually. The most important thing on this letter is the Photo.
If they have finished the letter you can hang it out in the classroom. Now they always have the opportunity to read something about the classmates.

2. Online Ressources
It is a book for children who learn to read. It delivers the messages of understanding, acceptance and confidence in a child-friendly format. This book will inspire kids to celebrate their individuality through acceptance of others and self-confidence.

The way people live is different in many parts of the world. This book depicts everyday situations and helps us to discover what makes us different and what binds us together. It shows the different food people eat.

This book shares the loving bond between same-sex parents and their children.

It teaches young children the key differences between animals and the importance of being yourself.

3. Reflection

Globalization at the cultural level has brought about the fragmentation and multiplication of identities and this may require, paradoxically, a return to the familiar. (Cohen et al.)

Children growing up in a world where there are so many different cultures and also a lot of different identities. So they should know something about that and should also accept other ethnic groups, other identities and so on.

It is indeed important to know something about other cultures and identities but I think that it is more important to find your own identity and your sense of belonging. Only then you may open yourself to something else

World citizenship is to be embraced, not feared. New forms of post-national understanding, responsibility, the state, justice, art, science and public understanding can emerge. This in turn can lead to more advanced forms of democracy, liberty and mutuality. (Beck)

First of all the world should begin to work together and not to be at war with one another. Accept! Accept that all people are equal and they all have a right to freedom. In the last few years, much has improved but I think we still have a long way to go.

  1. Dear Katarina,
I enjoyed reading your page. You have given good accounts of the class activities and included a few extra. The books look interesting but I don't think I can access them online - is that correct? I love the song! I agree that knowing yourself is really important, also in order to open up to other people.
